Things to do before the Tamaiti Hui

Hi Everyone!

We are very excited about our project and hope you are feeling the same! 

Before the Hui, we would like you to take some photos of yourself in a place in Tauranga; maybe at or up the Mount, on the beach, near the Port, at Pilot Bay, in Tauranga City, up in the Papamoa Hills or maybe somewhere else that you think is important to Tauranga. You could be doing something fun there such as fishing, shopping or swimming. These photos will be used in your books. We will also have time to take some photos during the Hui. You will be writing short, simple stories about these places.

We would like to level the books so when writing them, you will need to take some factors into account...

Use these words if you can - get, me, please, who, clean, good, have, has, had, no, it, my, let, make, makes, made, can, one, day, first, ready, back, cannot, down, some, tomorrow, yet.

You will also need to use some words that have the following blends:  

br dr cl pl pr tr sp dr fl st cl sl tw sm ch str wh sk gl fr sn ph gr kn spr thr squ 

Try to use words ending in er, ed, ing or en. 

Use a range of punctuation ! “  “ , . ? ’     

Use Mr and/or Mrs if you can...

Use contractions like can’t let’s I’m...

 Use middle sounds in words or oo, ee

Before the Hui, see if you can write a short story of your own
about a place in Tauranga, using the criteria above.

THEME: Toku Kainga – My Place  
WHO: Mrs Duggan & Mrs Budd

MISSION:

CREATE A SET OF JUNIOR READERS INFORMING CHILDREN ABOUT TAURANGA AND THE IMPORTANT SURROUNDING PLACES.  INCLUDE FAMILIAR COMMON WORDS AND NEW VOCABULARY FOR INTEREST AND READING CHALLENGE. SOME MAORI TRANSLATION.

YOU WILL CREATE: A set of 10 books themed around 'My Place'.

You will star in the photos and be the accredited author for your book which could be published in the future! You will get to pose doing fun activities (such as fishing and kayaking!) in some of the following places: Mount Beach, Mauao, Ocean Creatures, Port, Pilot Bay, Farms/Orchards, Sports, Tauranga City, Papamoa Hills/Otanewanuku, Legend of Mauao.

SKILLS NEEDED:

Photographic eye, good illustrator, ICT, Maori language, creativity, Literacy skills.

EQUIPMENT YOU WILL BE USING:

Digital Cameras, Video Cameras, Computers – Powerpoint/Publisher/ Keynote, Internet – Youblisher, Voice Recording Software.

WHAT TO DO BEFORE THE WORKSHOP:

Visit some of the places named above and take photos of the landscape and important areas to be used as a photobank for the books. You can star in the photos as well! Take a picture of yourself doing something fun that would normally be done in the place you take the photo. For example a picture of you swimming in the ocean, fishing off the wharf or at the top of the Mount after having climbed it. You can email the photos to us at deirdre@maungatapu.school.nz or vanya@maungatapu.school.nz or put them on a Pen Drive/USB Stick to bring on the day.

IF YOU CHOOSE TO ACCEPT THIS MISSION YOU WILL NEED TO COMPLETE THIS TASK IN TWO DAYS AND BE PREPARED TO SHARE YOUR PRODUCT TO AN AUDIENCE OF TEACHERS, PARENTS AND IMPORTANT PUBLIC. YOU MAY ALSO BE REQUIRED TO PREPARE THIS PRODUCT FOR SALE.
